So you want to be a referee. Here is some general information about becoming a referee for HYS:
Kiddie Referee:
Our kiddie referee program is an introductory program for young people who think they would like to referee. As a kiddie referee you will referee 2nd grade games on Saturday mornings at 8am in both the fall and spring programs. Certification is not needed, but you must exhibit a strong knowledge of the game, the confidence to make decisions based on that knowledge, and be at least a 4th grader. If you are interested, please contact a member of our board.

Now, if you still want to become a referee and would like to referee more advanced game situations you must become certified.

Referee Certification:
There are two referee certifications that are available:

Grade 9 Certification: As a Grade 9 referee you would be able to referee u10 small sided (6v6) games for both the Fall and Spring soccer sessions. This certification would also allow you to be an assistant referee (sidelines, with flags) for u12 (8v8) and older (11v11) games for the South Shore Soccer League. To become a Grade 9 referee you must be at least 11 years old and take a Grade 9 Introductory Course from the MSRC. A list of these courses can be found at www.massref.net held throughout the state, many of them local. Occasionally, HYS will sponsor a class in town. Regardless of where you take the course, if you are a member of HYS (player/coach/volunteer), and successfully pass the course, HYS will reimburse your registration fees. This is an 8 hour course.

Grade 8 Certification: As a Grade 8 referee you would be able to do all that a Grade 9 referee can do, but you would also be able to be the lead referee (the guy in the middle) for all 8v8 and 11v11 games up to and including u16 games for both HYS (Fall/recreational)) and the South Shore Soccer League (Spring/Travel).

There are two ways to become a Grade 8 referee:
Grade 8 “Bridge” Course: If you are currently a Grade 9 Referee and the total of your age and experience equals 15 years (ex., 2 years as a Grade 9 referee and 13 years old), you can take this course. Because of your experience as a Grade 9 referee, it is an 8 hour course.

Grade 8 Course: You must be 15 years old and no previous experience is required. This is a 16 hour class.

Again, a list of these classes can be found at www.massref.net, and as with the Grade 9 course, HYS will reimburse those members who successfully pass the course.

IMPORTANT-
Once you have successfully completed either referee course, you must take a recertification class each year to maintain your certification. Go to www.massref.net. HYS will reimburse members (players/coaches/volunteers) who successfully recertify.

For information about reffing for the South Shore Soccer League, contact the referee assignor at www.southshoresoccer.com.
