I. PURPOSE:
The purpose of the Hanson Youth Soccer tryout and selection process is to ensure that all players
receive a fair opportunity to join a team of their peers possessing similar game skills.
II. BACKGROUND:
When teams move from recreational status to competitive status, the nature of team formation needs
to change from one based on mixed skill sets to one based on player skill and commitment. The guiding principles
of the Hanson Youth Soccer Tryout Policy are to:
~ Assure that all interested players have access to a team that matches their competitive skill and motivation.
~ Assure that teams playing in competitive leagues consist of players with sufficient skill to compete at that level.
~ Assure teams are formed in a manner consistent with the club's mission statement.
~ Assure players are selected to teams fairly and based on defensible criteria.
~ Strengthen the quality of Hanson Youth Soccer teams and players that compete at a competitive level.
Over the years in which competitive teams have been formed in HYS, there has occasionally been confusion about
when tryouts are required, how they are organized, the role of evaluators and coaches, how players are
selected, etc. This policy will seek to clarify these issues.
III. SCOPE:
All HYS age groups (U6 to U19).
IV. SPRING TRAVEL PLAYER REGISTRATION (U10 and above)
The spring travel program is run by South Shore Soccer League (www.southshoresoccer.com). The spring travel
registration for HYS will be held in October
prior to the spring season. Please utilize the HYS
website (www.hansonsoccer.com) for the exact date. HYS tries to accommodate every player that signs up for
spring soccer, however, final team rosters are due to SSSL by January 15th of the playing year. Due to SSSL rule
of play 3.2, any player who has not registered prior to January 8th, will not be guaranteed a spot on a team. In the
case of extenuating circumstances (i.e. new player just moving into town) the HYS board will consider the late
registration on an individual basis based on SSSL rule of play 3.2.5, and availability of roster spots. Teams are
only allowed three (3) roster moves after final rosters have been submitted on January 15th. Roster moves are
defined as; a player released from its teams roster, the addition of any player to its teams roster.
V. GENERAL TRYOUT INFORMATION:
The tryout process is held once a year and consists of two tryout sessions held at least 1 week apart.
~ Tryouts for the U10 boys and girls age group will be held in October.
~ Tryouts for the U12 and above boys and girls age groups will be held in August.
Each tryout session will last approximately 1-1.5 hours. The results of these tryouts and the prior season
player evaluation forms will determine the selection of teams for the following spring season. Participants
are required to make at least one of the tryout sessions and are strongly encouraged to make both. If a player
does not attend either of the two tryout sessions or registers after tryouts have been completed, that player
will be assigned to the lowest level team if roster spots are available. The only exception to this rule due
to extenuating circumstances is in the event a player is injured and unable to participate in tryouts. That
player will be assigned to a team based on the prior season's player evaluation form from their coach and the
input of all coaches for their age group from the prior season. If your child is unable to attend either tryout
session please email the HYS president to let them know the details of your particular situation.
1. The Registrar is responsible for notification of tryout dates, times, and locations to all possible
participants. This will be done through the HYS website, email, mail, flyers and newspaper announcements.
2. Age coordinators are responsible for the coordination of player evaluation forms and tryout results.
3. Age coordinators will select a group of coaches and board members to help run the tryouts.
4. Tryout evaluations will be done by an unbiased committee of evaluators for each age group. This evaluator
committee will consist of coaches and board members for each tryout session.
5. Team rosters will be developed by the age coordinators in accordance with the SSSL guidelines. If any
team (U10 and above) is over the maximum roster allotment per SSSL rule 3.1.4, that team will forfeit any opportunity
to play in play-offs.
| "SSSL rule 3.1.4: Teams playing 11 a side may have a maximum of 18 team players and a minimum of 13 players on
their roster at any given time during the season. Teams with more than the maximum number of players
allowed on their roster will sign a waiver relinquishing their opportunity for any SSSL postseason play, but
can only have 18 players on the sideline dressed to play. U10 teams will have a maximum roster of 14 players
in a minimum of eight players. U12 8v8 will have a maximum roster of 15 players and a minimu of nine players." |
VI. PLAYER/PARENT TRYOUT INFORMATION:
1. Parents must fill out the registration form and hand it in the morning of tryouts.
2. Participants will be issued a colored pinney with a number on it. This number will be used by evaluators to
identify participants. Pinneys must be returned each day.
3. Players must wear appropriate workout clothes including cleats and shin guards. Players must NOT wear
their uniform jerseys.
4. Players must bring their own ball.
5. There will be water breaks between drills. Players must bring their own water, snacks, etc.
VII. TRYOUT POLICY and ORGANIZATION:
Tryouts will consist of skills stations comprised of small-sided games. Players will be evaluated and scored
individually from 5 (highest) to 1 (lowest) on the following criteria: dribbling, passing, shooting, defense,
athleticism, field awareness, speed of play, aggressiveness, and attitude. These scores will be totaled and the
team selection procedure discussed below will begin.
U8 and below (Kiddie) coordinators will use a lottery draft to develop teams of mixed skills sets for both
fall and spring recreational seasons using Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association single year age grouping.
There are no tryouts for the U8 and below age groups.
U10 fall recreational coordinator will use player evaluations forms (Appendix A) from the prior season, provided
by coaches at the end of each season. These forms will be used to develop fall recreational U10 teams.
U10 fall
teams will be made up from mixed age groups (9 & 10 yr olds) and mixed skill levels.
U10 spring travel coordinator will use tryout evaluation scoring results (Appendix B) and player evaluation
forms (Appendix A) from the prior season to develop teams of like skill sets.
|
|
1. Spring season tryouts will be held each year in October
for both boys
and girls, using this tryout policy and forms.
2. Spring teams will be formed with players of like skill sets to field the best
team possible
3. Teams will be made from mixed ages (9&10 yr olds). The player's birth date (based on the
Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association two year age grouping)
will determine which age league players
play in (see appendix C). |
U12 and above
spring and fall travel coordinator will use tryout evaluation scoring results (Appendix B) and
player evaluation forms (Appendix A) from the prior season to develop teams of like skill sets.
|
|
1. Tryouts will be held in August for both boys and girls, using this tryout policy and forms.
2. Teams will be formed with players of like skill sets to field the best team possible. These teams will play
together for the fall, winter (if player chooses to play indoor), and spring seasons.
3. Players are not required to play both the fall and spring seasons. Players who choose to only play during
the spring season still need to attend the August tryouts in order to be placed on a team matching their skill set.
4. Teams will be made from mixed ages (11&12, 13&14, etc.). The player's birth date (based on the Massachusetts
Youth Soccer Association two year age grouping)
will determine which age league players play in (see appendix C). |
VIII. PLAYERS PLAYING UP IN AGE GROUPS
Beginning at the U10 age level, players can play up an age level if the following criteria are met:
|
|
1. Player must attend tryout for both the younger and older age groups.
2. Coaches believe player is dominant in their current age group.
3. Coaches from both age groups believe the player is capable of competing at the same level as the
players in the next higher age group.
4. Player and parent accept offer to play up at the next higher age group. |
If a player is selected to play on a team in the higher age group but declines the offer, that player will
be placed on the younger age group team based on the younger age group tryout scores.
IX. EVALUATORS:
HYS would like to have a core number of 12-16 evaluators consisting of HYS coaches and board members. There
will be at least at least 6 evaluators consisting of coaches and board members based on the # of volunteers who
want to evaluate players at each tryout session.
|
|
1. Evaluators are dedicated to a single skill station (described below) so that their assessments are
consistent across all participants.
2. Evaluators may evaluate players in the same age group which they coach, but may not evaluate their own
child. To compensate for a player who may have one less evaluation then others, all players' scores will
be averaged. |
Qualifications to select evaluators will include items such as:
|
|
a. Licenses held (G, F, E, etc. coaching license)
b. Experience (past playing and/or coaching experience, etc.)
c. Attendance of any outside soccer classes (coaching clinics, etc.) |
X. SKILL STATIONS:
There will be skill stations for each tryout session. In addition, there will be a goalie station for all
participants wishing to be evaluated as a goalie. Goalie evaluations will simply be added to regular tryout
evaluations and will in no way affect a players ranking for regular field evaluations.
1 vs. 1 Station:
Description:
A defender and an attacker.
The defender is near the goal and serves the ball to the attacker who is
about 20 yards out. Attacker tries to score, defender defends. Play for approximately 30 seconds or until
attacking team scores or ball is knocked out of the grid. Players will run through this station 4-6 times
to give evaluators sufficient time to evaluate players.
Evaluator instructions
This will very quickly uncover the attackers who can and will go at the defender, beat him or her and get
off a good shot. This will also uncover the defenders who make the proper runs to close down space on the
attacker quickly and get in good defensive position.
2 vs. 1 Station:
Description: 2 attackers and 1 defender.
The defender is near the goal and serves the ball to one of the
attackers. The defender closes down on the attackers. Attackers try to score by attacking and making
intelligent passes for the other attacker to score. The defender defends both attackers. Play for
approximately 30 seconds or until attacking team scores or ball is knocked out of the grid. Players will
run through this station 4-6 times to give evaluators sufficient time to evaluate players.
Evaluator Instructions
Look for offensive players who have the composure to make good decisions and accurate passes.
3 vs. 3 Station:
Description: 3 defenders and 3 attackers.
The defenders are on the goal line. One defender serves the
ball to one of the attackers. The defenders close down on the attackers. Attackers try to score by attacking
and making intelligent passes for the other attackers to score. If defenders steal the ball they are on
offense and attackers play defense. Play for approximately 2 minutes or until one team scores or ball is
knocked out of the grid. Players will run through this station at least 4-6 times to give evaluators sufficient
time to evaluate players.
Evaluator Instructions
See how the players transition back and forth from offense to defense, see how players with and without the ball
use open spaces and support their teammates both offensively and defensively, and evaluate a players ability to
pass, shoot, dribble, accelerate, tackle, etc.
Small Sided Game Station:
Description: Participants will be asked to play in small-sided games.
This is a live game situation. Participants
will play both offensive and defensive positions. U10 and U12 will play 5 vs. 5. U14 can play 5 vs. 5 but
also will have the flexibility to change it to 8 vs. 8 if the coordinator feels it will be more appropriate
based on the number of players trying out to ensure maximum
ball time for each participant. Teams will play for 10 minutes and rotate with water breaks in between until each
team has played each other.
Evaluator Instructions
Evaluators will be instructed to evaluate player's ability in many areas of the game:
- Technical Ability - dribbling, passing, shooting, receiving, etc.
- Tactical Awareness - playing different positions in different areas of the field, providing support, using
open space, etc.
- Physical Abilities - speed, strength, balance, etc
- Psychological - aggressiveness, determination, discipline, sportsmanship, etc.
Goalie Station:
Description: Goal Keeper
Participants wishing to be evaluated for a goalie position will be run through a series of drills
including blocking, catching, and kicking (Punting) the ball.
Evaluator Instructions
Evaluators will be instructed to evaluate the participant's ability to stop offensive plays, block shots and
control the ball in the box.
XI. TEAM SELECTION:
Participant results will be tallied by the age coordinator after completion of tryouts. The age group
coordinators will meet with all prior season coaches face to face and then determine the spring season
rosters. Rosters will be determined based on defensible criteria, through a combination of tryout scoring
results, and the prior season player evaluation forms provided by their coach. HYS reserves the right to
determine the number of players on each roster. For example, if the maximum number of players allowed on a
roster is 14, HYS may only assign 12 players to the roster. Having previously played for a team does not
guarantee a spot for the next season. Emails or phone calls will be sent or made as soon as selections are
complete to notify players of their team placement. Team selections will also be posted on the Hanson Youth
Soccer website. This is typically within a few weeks of tryouts.
XII. COACHING SELECTIONS:
Coaching applicants will be reviewed and voted upon by the HYS board after teams have been selected.
XIII. CONCLUSION:
HYS is a 100% volunteer organization and does its best to be fair, consistent, and balanced in this selection
process. However, know that we are human and this is not an exact science.
In addition, there will inevitably be differences between some parents' perception of their child's ability and
the perceptions of the coaches and evaluators. HYS fully understands that differences in perception can create
disappointment and frustration on the part of the players and parents affected. Disappointing decisions need
not derail a committed, enthusiastic soccer player's development. To stay on track it is critical that the
player and the parents do their best to stay positive and take advantage of the opportunities they have to
improve over the year so that they are well positioned to succeed at the following year's tryouts.
HYS is committed to providing a quality soccer opportunity to all players, regardless of which team they are
selected. Thank you for your participation in Hanson Youth Soccer. If you have any questions, concerns, or
comments you may direct them to the Hanson Youth Soccer Board.
